Start by knowing your property

The most effective energy measures
1. Attic and roof insulation

Attic insulation is the cheapest and most effective energy measure. Many older Danish houses have only 100-150 mm of insulation, while today's recommendation is 300-400 mm.

2. Window replacement

3. Heat pump
Price: DKK 50,000-120,000 | Savings: 30-60% on heating bills
An air-to-water heat pump is the most popular solution in Denmark. It replaces or supplements your current heating system. Installation requires an authorized plumber.
4. Facade insulation
Price: DKK 100,000-200,000 | Savings: 15-30% on heating bills
External facade insulation provides the best effect but is also the most expensive solution. A bricklayer can help assess whether your house is suitable.
5. Solar panels
Price: DKK 60,000-120,000 | Savings: DKK 4,000-10,000/year on electricity
Solar panels produce free electricity and have a payback period of 6-10 years. Installation requires an authorized electrician.
The order matters
Reduce heat loss first
Start with insulation of attic, walls, and windows. There is no point installing a heat pump in a house that leaks heat.
Upgrade the heating system
Once the house is tight, you can choose the right heating system — typically a heat pump or district heating.
Add renewable energy
Solar panels make the most sense as the last step, when heating demand has already been reduced.
Get a new energy label
After renovation, you can get a new energy label issued that reflects the improvements and increases property value.
Grants and financing
Energy renovations can often be financed via construction loans or mortgage loans at lower interest rates than consumer loans. Contact your bank for advice on the best financing model.
